PVR Cinemas launches India’s first multiplex in an airport complex

Bengaluru: Indian multiplex chain PVR Ltd. celebrated another milestone of opening India’s first multiplex to be housed within an airport complex at Aerohub Chennai, announced Santanu Pai, vice president of business development at PVR Ltd. on Thursday in a LinkedIn post. The five-screen multiplex can seat 1155 people.

“Keeping our commitment to provide high-quality cinema viewing experience, this multiplex will have cutting-edge technologies including 2K RGB+ laser projectors, Real D 3D digital stereoscopic projection and Dolby Atmos high-definition immersive audio to name a few,” wrote Pai in the post.

The multiplex opened to the public with the releases of Varisu (Tamil), Thunivu (Tamil), Pathaan (Hindi and Tamil), Avatar: The Way of Water (English), and BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas (Korean).

With the opening of the Chennai airport multiplex, PVR now operates over 908 screens at 182 properties in 78 cities in India and Sri Lanka. The multiplex operator has 12 properties with 77 screens in Chennai alone. Aerohub is its fourteenth property in Tamil Nadu.

PVR is expanding its foothold with its aim to operate 1,000 screens by the end of the financial year 2024, by adding 100 more screens in the next 15 months, said Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, joint managing director of PVR Ltd. Read about its 2023 expansion strategy here.

Headquartered in Gurugram, PVR Ltd. was founded by Ajay Bijli in 1997. The company established India’s first multiplex cinema in 1997 at Saket in New Delhi.

During the October-December 2022 quarter, PVR posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 16.1 crore, against a loss of Rs 10 crore in the year-ago period.
