Hyperlocal delivery start-up Roadrunnr has acquired food ordering firm TinyOwl Technology Pvt Ltd and has transitioned into a food ordering and delivery platform. It has also rebranded itself as Runnr.
“Runnr’s strengths lie in technology and efficiency of operations that the company has developed over the last one year. After its acquisition of TinyOwl, the company (Carthero Technologies Pvt Ltd) has decided to re-position itself as a customer-centric platform and launched a full integrated app called Runnr which is now available on the iOS and google play store,” the company said in a statement.
All of TinyOwl’s 100 employees will join Runnr. The combined entity (Roadrunnr + Tinyowl) will come in direct competition with Zomato and Swiggy. The app is currently live in South Bombay with over 150 restaurants. There is no minimum order size and the app offers live tracking of delivery.
Sequoia Capital and Nexus Venture Partners are the common investors in the two companies and have pushed the deal.
Earlier in March 2016, Roadrunnr was forced to change the brand name to Runnr, after an unknown company filed a lawsuit against Roadrunnr over an intellectual property right. The startup also changed its domain name to runnr.in.
Former Flipkart employees Kumar and Arpit Dave founded Bengaluru-based Roadrunnr in February. The focus of the company was to conduct business-to-business deliveries with the usage of an on-demand model to partner with delivery boys and manage the demand and charge flat rate per delivery from the businesses.
In 2014, TinyOwl was founded by IIT Bombay graduates Mandad, Gaurav Choudhary, Saurabh Goyal, Shikhar Paliwal and Tanuj Khandelwal. It raised Rs 50 crore from its existing investors – equoia Capital, Nexus Venture Partners and Matrix Partners – in October.
