With ear cuffs at Balenciaga, crystals at Lanvin, fringed bracelets at Nina Ricci and statement facial piercings at Givenchy, Images Business of Fashion does a recap of the jewellery trends seen on the New York, London, Milan and Paris runways.
`Some of us may hesitate and come back or take that extra time in the morning to rethink our fashion choices and deliberate on enhancing ‘the look’ with the right jewellery. Or, you can stay ahead of the game by stocking up on what will be in this season, no matter what clothes you wear it with.
So here are the top five jewellery trends for 2016 that will not only dictate fashion choices, but will be the point of reference for jewellery manufacturers.
Crystals are being touted as the new way to rock understated glamour. It is just a little rough around the edges. Chic brands such as Celine, Lanvin, Moschino, Alexander McQueen, Giorgio Armani, Versace and Gucci showcased geodes, unusual gemstones and raw crystals for an earthy and elegant look that is not over the top.
The best thing about a chain is the number of possibilities in variation and design possible with a number of interlinked ovals of different sizes, shapes and colours. Double chain earrings, palm bracelets, belts, chokers either in minimalistic and classic metallic forms of chains from Nina Ricci, or the delicate and wider designs from Saint Laurent, and the pendant-types of chains from Versace—chains are starting reactions everywhere. The squared geometric forms from Balenciaga, the super macro forms from Christian Dior, the luxurious interpretations from Gucci, the XXL chain necklaces from Stella McCartney—there are immense possibilities.

Structured gold jewellery

The metal of the gods is not going anywhere. There is something timeless about the elegance of gold juxtaposed with structured silhouettes. The year 2016 will see a gold rush revival. From structured cuffs at Louis Vuitton to double chains at Dior and mix ‘n’ match shapes at Loewe and J W Anderson, the jewellery on most runways provided an injection of gold, glamour and plenty of volume. A lesson in geometry, or how to put the graphic runway style into practice. Something to keep in mind when putting together your own bold, gold look is to mix textures. Mixing textures keeps your monochromic look interesting instead of falling flat.
It’s all in the shape. Round. Eternal. Constant. Hoops never grows old. Asides from exaggerated shapes, tribal influences within hoops were evident in Balman and Marni while Louise Vuitton celebrated their retro liveliness. With arty cuffs, crystal statement earrings for evening and surrealist pendants already a hit, bell hoops from Celine furthered the graphic effect of circles.
Ear cuffs have been around for a while and they are clinging on for yet another season or two. But they certainly have had a change in identity reinventing the simplicity that was so popular in the past seasons. For instance, ear cuffs with multiple rings and Balenciaga’s new reinterpretation of the ear cuff with classic Parisian pearls.
