L Subhash Chandra has not just guided Sangeetha Mobiles from a fledgling start-up to the multi-product retail powerhouse that is today, but is also a key evangelist in creating a blueprint for the future, with a vision for the company to be at the vanguard of a new retail revolution.
Presiding over South India’s largest mobile retail chain, which has turnover of over INR 1,000 crores (USD 161 mn) and seven million customers, Subhash Chandra oversees the operations of the chain’s 300-plus outlets. Under this second-generation entrepreneur’s leadership, Sangeetha Mobiles has also successfully transitioned into an omni-channel retailer, with an ecommerce destination that is just as popular as its physical stores.
Embarking on his professional life when most people are still in school classrooms, Subhash Chandra assisted his father, L P Narayana Reddy, in sales at a nondescript retail outlet called ‘Sangeetha’, at the young age of 16. More than 30 years on, his passion for retail remains his life’s driving force. “I enjoy being in retail because it’s fun to interact with new customers every day. I for one learn immensely from these interactions,” he says.
Building a team of exceptional leaders within the company is what he counts as his finest professional achievement, and believes a commitment to constant upliftment is critical for success in retail. “To achieve full potential, Indian retailers need to — and have to — innovate all the time,” he states.
