Ravi Shankar calls for open, plural and inclusive Internet

Speaking at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) conference at Marrakech in Morocco, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Communications and IT pressed on the point that India supports multi-stakeholder model for internet governance and emphasized that it should not become a monopoly of a few.
He said internet governance’s entire architecture is under transition. He added internet should not be allowed to be abused by the few, to unleash terror and cybercrime through dark net and dark webs and other instrument. So, internet should be make secure and the interference of government is of utmost importance here.
He further added that the priority of the government is to create a robust digital infrastructure and ensure banking the unbanked, funding the unfunded, securing the unsecured and pensioning the unpensioned.
With the help of global consultation process, a new Internet governance model is being constructed. ICANN is co-ordinating the new Internet governance model  and it has been mandated by the US  US Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to manage the Internet under a contract. It is expiring on September 30.
