Must Read

With onion rates touching Rs 80 per kg in retail, PepperTap, a mobile-first grocery delivery service, has said it will offer flat 50 per cent discount on sale of key kitchen item.
The offer would be available in 10 cities — Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh.
“Going live on August 31, the offer would see onions available at a flat 50 per cent discount on the city’s retail prices specific to the day. Onion prices are already 20 per cent lower than the current retail prices on PepperTap,” the Gurgaon-based firm said in a statement.
PepperTap said it is procuring exclusive onion stocks from its partners and vendors across all cities to fulfil the growing demand.
“We established PepperTap to ease the grocery shopping challenges faced by Indian consumers. By offering this discounted sale, we wish to alleviate the consumer inconvenience caused due to this unexpected rise in onion prices,” said Navneet Singh, Co-founder & CEO, PepperTap.
PepperTap, which started operations in 2014, has already raised series A round of funding of USD 10 million by Sequoia Capital and SAIF Partners.
Onion prices in both wholesale and retail markets have risen sharply in last two months. While onions are available at Rs 48 per kg in wholesale market at Lasalgaon, Asia’s biggest onion market, in Maharashtra, the retail prices are ruling at around Rs 80 per kg across the country.
Onion production is estimated to have fallen by 5 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 crop year to nearly 190 lakh tonnes. Other online grocers are also reportedly selling onions at lower-than-market rates by cutting down on profit margins, eliminating middlemen, planned procurement and managing logistics better.
