Big Basket to set up warehouses to fuel express deliveries

Bengaluru-based online grocer Big Basket is in process to set up multiple warehouses across India, in order to strengthen its one-hour express delivery.
The company is planning to establish about10 small warehouses in each metro city in its network, and one each in 50 towns. The dark houses will allow greater control and wider inventory. It will also create opportunity to expand into smaller towns.
” We’re a full-service online grocer that delivers large volumes bur out one-hour express delivery caters to the top-up requirement through the month. These dark stores will serve the latter’s need,” said BigBasket founder and chief executive Hari Menon.
“We will choose about five or six towns that are an overnight drive away from each central delivery center in cities like Bengaluru, where the buying will be done. We will not be buying locally,” Menon added. Dark stores in cities will be of around 5,000 square feet each, with up to 1,500 product lines being fed from central delivery centers in each city. The e-grocer is still in process to chalk out plans to open its first store.
Launched in December 2011, the company ships about 11,500 orders a day across the country. The company runs its own end-to-end logistics. From procurement to warehousing to delivery, a fleet of their own delivery vans and a team of 500-plus people manage everything in-house.
