This Spring Bag It Lanvin Style

Must Read

Alber Elbaz, Art Director at Lanvin recently raised eyebrows by sending models down the SS’14 runway clutching eye-catching metallic bags.

Fashion house Lanvin has been consistently churning out designs that marry grungy downtown edginess with uptown glamour. After giving us the Golden Dream clutch and the Pouchette Python bag, the brand has successfully established itself as au courant accessory label.

The brand’s artistic director Alber Elbaz recently raised eyebrows by sending models down the Summer 2014 runway clutching eye-catching metallic bags that polarised the opinions of the fashion community. Trust the Moroccan-born Israeli Elbaz to inject some much-needed humour and eccentricity in luxury items of today. It is what he calls the Paper Bag, made of ‘papyrus leather’, which is actually really thin lambskin that is given a shiny metallic fi nish. And, to keep it really light, the interior is made up of cotton and polyester, with the only other heavy bit of the bag made up of the chain handles. The  materials used are buttery-thin and soft and make the bag that much more pliable.

This particular series of bags launched by Lanvin fits perfectly with the present state of worldwide cities. Everyone seems to be on the go, and designers have tapped into the rhythmic changes of how we proceed through day, opting or at least to implement greater versatility to their collections.

The paper bag is designed in papyrus leather, which is thin as paper for the added effect, and is underlined by quilted lamé lambskin in bronze, silver, white, black and last but not least, the ever so gorgeous shade of midnight blue. The paper bag also offers a sumptuous contrast of shape and texture, and shiny double serpent completes the palette of materials in navy shades decorated with fine details.

The bag is certainly far more glamorous than what it sounds. The glistening lamé lambskin brings out divaesque instincts. Available in white, black or midnight blue (playing a similar shade of blue iconic to the brand), there are also the safe bet
favourites like silver and bronze.

Think about the aptly named paper bag’s functionality: the tote bag has room for all your accumulated knick-knacks, and the lightweight material means that your shoulder won’t pack the extra weight. Even with its paper-thin exterior, the bag’s unfussy style is able to withstand the daily grind. Sling it the traditional way or carry it hobo-style like what Elbaz prescribed on the runway – it can be carried over the shoulder or crushed in your hand. Though a far cry from the structured totes of the past few seasons, the Lanvin paper bag also comes with a removable pocket that can be used as a clutch.

Available in four different sizes and a plethora of finishes, you can carry it over the shoulder or ‘crushed’ in your hand, the bonus being a tiny pouch that can be found on the inside, which you can remove and use as a clutch on its own. Priced in the thousand euro range, it is something you will find either very chic or an extreme eyesore. You will either love it, or loathe it. But then, even Van Gogh’s work was trashed by critics of the day.
