Polo Shirts SS ’15 Trends for Men

Must Read

Smartened-up styles, reworked stripes and updated plackets – including zipper closures and buttonless v-necks – are the key evelopments for polo shirt

WGSN Analysis

  • Greater emphasis is put on the placket, with extended widths, zipper closures and v-neck versions. Zippers offer a sportiness to the polo, while buttonless v-necks have a clean, paredback effect.
  • More formalised shirts come in high-shine fabrics with jacquards or micro-geo patterns. Styling is also key here, with brights pops livening neutral suiting and darker tones grounding bold ones.
  • Blocking remains significant for minimal sport or pop-prep looks. Stripes continue their relevance in retro vertical or variegated horizontal versions. Micro-patterns, artistic prints and optical geometrics comprise the print and pattern stories.

Placket Emphasis
A slightly more directional approach features emphasis on the placket. Widened placket widths with standard-size buttons are key for this design development. The wider placket can also be contrasted for emphasis or kept monochrome for subtlety. Another method includes thicker contrast buttons.

Blocked
Blocking techniques include standard splices using colours and prints, as well as  calculated placements to create familiar designs. Subtle, hidden blocking found at the back yoke or arm inseam evokes a minimalist sport aesthetic. All-over blocking, from the placket to the pocket, lends a youthful look.

Formal Styling
While the t-shirt is still a popular choice for underneath blazers, the polo provides a more sophisticated, smartened-up ensemble. Bright pops liven neutral-coloured suits, while darker tones such as ink and navy ground brighter ones. Bold item blocking
gives a louder pop-prep aesthetic that rivals David Hockney’s style.

V-Neck
A somewhat pared-back option is seen in the v-neck polo, which is absent of any button closures. The size of the v-neck ranges from minuscule to a more standard length. Contrast tipping on the placket will draw attention to the v-neck, while
collar and sleeve tipping are also welcomed.

Prints And Patterns
Prints and patterns for the polo shirt range from small-scale repeats and optical geometrics to artistic grids and floating florals. Painterly florals look fresh printed on mesh for a fun juxtaposition, while grid patterns have a faint brushstroke feel. Micro patterns remain for the polo shirt, evolving into illusionary geometric prints.

Stripes
Stripes continue as an important pattern, but with several different directions. Vertical stripes give off a vintage vibe, becoming more playful in fun alternating colours
or remaining retro in wider widths. Variegated stripes with photoreal imagery mixed in creates a modern, youthful pattern, while classic blue and white candy stripes have a formalised feel.

High-Shine
High-shine fabrics add a sense of formality to the polo shirt – particularly to the short-sleeve silhouette. As seen in the longsleeve polo, silk and cashmere blends contribute a shinier surface with even more interest created through jacquards and micro-geo patterns.

Long-Sleeved
The long-sleeve polo carries over from the autumn/winter 2014/15 season in both  neutral and bright colours, but keeping a classic, commercial look. Contrast collars
and cuffs, which look best in tonal combinations, keep the item casual, while silk and cashmere blends add a touch of luxury.

Zipper
In line with the sport trend that continues to permeate menswear, button closures are replaced by zippers for an active touch. This detail update, seen on both longand short-sleeve polos, generally remains at half-zip length or slightly longer, playing with placket emphasis.
