Andrew Collinge: Award Winning Hairstylist

Must Read

What have been the biggest breaks of your career?

I have been fortunate enough to be trained by two great hairdressers: my father Peter Collinge, who taught me the skills of cutting and blow-drying, and Michael Rasser, because of whom I developed a passion for dressing long hair. Obviously, meeting Liz was a key highlight of my career, as we eventually got married and started working together on photo shoots and on ITV’s famed programme, ‘This Morning’. This helped build up our national profile and opened many doors for us, leading to various other opportunities.

What is your inspiration?

I feel inspired every day and get inspiration from everywhere, be it architecture, art, fashion or nature.

How has the journey been so far?

My career graph has been extremely exciting. Hairdressing is a truly rewarding career option; no two days are the same here.

What challenges did you have to face? How did you deal with them?

Early on in my career, it was hard to get the balance right between building up my profile by doing shows, running a business and spending time with my family. Hairdressing can become all-consuming, but I think, I’ve got the balance just right now.

What is your USP?

The styles I produce have a timeless look, but with a blend of  modernity. They have real longevity. I focus on taking inspiration from previous eras and trends and adding a modern twist to them. I also focus a lot on texture.

What are the latest trends in hair?

There’s a great emphasis on natural textures. People are looking at enhancing them and adding shine and volume. I’m not too much in favour of over-styled hair; too much straightening can ruin a look.

Your favourite products and equipment?

I’ve used Denman brushes throughout my career, as they are perfect for long hair and are multi-purpose. I also love the versatility of a classic 3” hairpin – it’s the essential accessory for dressing hair. My favourite product is Moussing Gelee, which is a dual action mousse and gel. Unfortunately, it’s no longer in production, but I have enough to last me a lifetime! It’s the ultimate styling product for getting texture and hold.

Who, according to you, is the guru and rising star of the hair industry?

This is a difficult question as there are so many. I have a fantastic team who are all doing outstanding work.

What advice would you like to give to those who are keen on taking up this profession?

You’ve got to be prepared to put in a lot of your own time to practice and hone your skills and master all disciplines. You also need to observe others and never stop learning.

What is the difference between an editorial shoot, a fashion show and designing a collection?

For an editorial shoot, it is the client who calls the shots, as the hair needs to reflect the concept. You need to run a proper research on the concept to get it right. For fashion shows, it’s important the hair compliments the clothes without overpowering them. I like to keep the hair slick and simple. For collections, you need to show all aspects of your skills and showcase your diversity. I always aim to use minimal PhotoShop effects; the hair should look as real as it is.

Your future plans?

After the success of my Apps, I’m working on new ones. I’m also focusing on my Academy, launching the Sunday seminars. I think it’s vital we continue to invest in the next generation of hairdressers; they are the ones who are going to shape the future of this industry.
