Indian weddings are known to be unfathomably large, opulent and elaborate. They are spread over several days preceding and following the big day. Indians are now increasingly spending more on marriages than ever before. The big, fat Indian weddings are looked as a way to match up to a perceived social standing. The weddings are now increasingly becoming an arena for social competition between families to match up to the extravaganza.

The total number of weddings in India in a given year ranges from one to ten million; the wide distortion in figures primarily due to scarcity of records in rural areas. According to a newspaper report, in November 2012, around 60,000 weddings took place in New Delhi alone. Each year, around 2,000 high-end weddings take place in India. These weddings are a display of opulence as thousands of guests descend at the ceremony. Everything at such places – flower decoration, jewellery, stage, clothing, accessories – is exquisite.
