White is the New Black for Eyes: Shallu Chandla

Must Read

Shalu Chandla, a Delhi-based make-up artist, is known for her fine work across a variety of visual media — from television to bridal, advertising, editorial, beauty and ramp. Salon India talks to the self-motivated make-up artist to know more about her.

Journey So Far

I started off  my profession as a teacher that I continued for over seven years. However, following the same monotous routine with no creativity bored me soon. Also, the profession did not pay me well enough, it was difficult for me to survive with a kid. Hence, in a bid to improve my financial position, I enrolled for VLCC hair and make-up course.

Later, I joined Make-up Designory (MUD) from Pivot Point and enrolled for other courses to polish my skills. I left teaching once I was confident about make-up skills and opted for freelance work to earn livelihood. I earned Rs. 500 only from my first assignment and after that I never looked back.

Today, things are so much better! Last year, I have travelled to Australia to learn more about beauty and make-up, and hone my skills. At present, I am handling various freelance assignments.

Inspiration

Ambika Pillai is my inspiration, her life is similar to mine. I hope that one day I will also be able to achieve something bigger for me and my daughter.

Trend: White is a New Black

Today, white is the new black for eye make-up as black, blue, brown and green are over used eye colours and have become boring. Though, white was under-rated initially but now it is being used in various ways to enhance the eyes.

With a white eye liner, the eyes look brighter and bold. It can instantly brighten up and lift up a tired face. It could be used creatively as a winged liner or as a hint in the inner corners of the eyes.

Favourite Cosmetics Brands

I like M.A.C and Clinique for its super staying power, best good coverage and wide range.

Favourite Make-up Accessory

I feel helpless without my M.A.C buffer brush, which helps me get  to give a neat, blended skin and my eyelash curler!

Future Plans

I want to see my work on the pages of editorial magazines across the globe. I would also like to participate in major campaigns, too, and travel across the world to gain and imbibe more information from the senior make-up artists. At the end of the day, I just want to feel as if I have given my best shot in every single project I did.
