Online retail websites have recorded a 65% rise in traffic this festival season compared to the last year, according to a survey by Assocham. India’s ~Rs 52,000 cr online shopping is expected to grow at 100% per year; it is growing not only in the larger metros, but also in smaller cities.

“Shopping on ground has taken a back seat. Factors like rising fuel price, traffic snarls, parking issues, long lines for bill payment, security reasons, online discounts, more choice and product comparisons, home delivery, and 24*7 shopping are keeping consumers indoors,” said D S Rawat, Secretary General, Assocham. The survey covered ~5,000 shoppers in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and other cities. Delhi topped the list with 62%, followed by Mumbai and Ahmedabad. NRIs are more actively shopping online during the festival season.
During Raksha Bandhan, online shopping by NRIs contributed 60-70% of the total shopping, whereas during Diwali, it increases to 90%. The study fi nds that 35% of regular shoppers are in the 18-25 age group, 55% in the 26-35 age group, 8% in the 36-45 age group and 2% in 45-60, with 85% of online shoppers male as against 15% females.
According to the survey, India has more than 100 million Internet users, out of which around 50% opt for online purchases and the number is growing every year. The online business module is cost-effective, easily accessible and profi table in many functional areas. “Both consumers and retailers want safe, simple and comprehensive online shopping that will truly realise the range of power of the Internet,” the survey adds.
With more online shops registering 100% annual growth, many retail chains and companies are keen to tap the e-shopping market. ‘’In India, customers wait for the festive season to get the best deals. The idea is to provide customers with an unmatched shopping experience ahead of the festive season with a fabulous range of products at unbeatable prices,” said Rawat.
