Alkem’s new sweetener to challenge market leader Cadila

The Indian pharmaceutical company, Alkem Laboratories, has developed a low-cost sweetener, which will reportedly cost 40 times less than market leader, Zydus Cadila’s Sugar Free, and will have seven times the sweetness of normal sugar. As reported by The Global Diabetes Community, UK, the sweetener, branded as ‘Nano Sugar, will be manufactured from concentrated sugarcane juice in order to increase the sweetness level and reduce the calorie intake considerably. The company plans to launch ‘Nano Sugar’ in the next two months. Samprada Singh, Chairman, Alkem Laboratories, says, “It can be used as an ingredient for food and desserts and will significantly bring down the cost of sweeteners for those suffering from diabetes.” Currently, Alkem has a premium sugarfree product called ‘Blocal One Drop’ in its portfolio, which is priced between Rs200 for 20 gm. Blocal One Drop is derived using an artificial product sucralose, which costs about
Rs6,000 per kg, pushing up the cost of the final product.
