Leading retailers may recruit IAM students

Students from the first batch of Apparel Marketing & Merchandising, a one-year PG course at Institute of Apparel Management (IAM), Gurgaon, are expected to be recruited by leading brands including Pantaloons, Shoppers’ Stop, Reliance, and Airtel.

“Our students are undergoing internship at leading companies, and we are confident that they will be absorbed by the same companies after completion of the course,” Shankar Sahay, associate professor, Institute of Apparel Management, told Indiaretailing.

“The institute has signed a memorandum of understating with London College of Fashion. From the first batch, 13 students are going for a four-week training at the college,” informed Sahay.

Started in August 2007, IAM will introduce customised programmes for working professionals in the areas of total quality management, corporate social responsibility, and fashion forecasting. The institute is also planning to train working executives in apparel industry through management development programmes.

The second batch for Apparel Marketing & Merchandising course has already started.

According to India Retail Report 2007, organised retail in India has the potential to generate some 2.5 million direct jobs through retail operation and at least 10 million additional jobs in retail support activities. Of the Rs 1,200,000 crore retail market, clothing, textiles and fashion accessories constitute the second largest block after food and grocery.
