“At present, we have 20 outlets of various formats operational in Bangalore. RPG group plans to have 1,000 stores by 2008, 2,000 by 2009, and 5,000 by 2011, across various formats like hypermarkets, supermarkets, daily stores, express stores, and fruit and vegetable stores,” Samar Singh Sheikhawat, VP marketing, Spencer’s Retail, told Indiaretailing. “We have lined up 500 new stores in the next 12 months,” Sheikhawat added. RPG group’s retail outlets include Music World, Books and Beyond, and RPG Cellucom.

Spencer’s has four retail formats – Spencer’s Daily (the erstwhile Foodworld outlets spread over 4,000 to 7,000 square feet, selling groceries, fresh food, etc.), Spencer’s Fresh (2,000 square feet stores selling vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs and the like), Spencer’s Super (bigger outlets spread over 8,000 to 15,000 square feet, selling groceries, fresh food, etc.), and Spencer’s Hyper (huge outlets measuring over 25,000 square feet, selling groceries, fresh food, etc., at cheap rates). RPG’s retail arms are spread across 43 cities and towns across the country.

RPG group is targeting a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore from its retail business in the current fiscal. It is also learnt that the group is in the process of finalising a partner to bring in an international non-food brand into the country.
