Casual dining major Barcelos enters India

Barcelos, the leading South African casual dining restaurant chain, made its debut in the Indian market with the launch of its first outlet in Delhi on February 26. Barcelos, which has over 150 outlets in 17 countries, has chosen Khan Market, Delhi’s poshest high street, as its India debut location.
The launch of the 2,400 sq.ft, two-storey outlet was attended by Malusi Mogale, Deputy high commissioner and Minister, Republic of South Africa, Costa Maziz, Chairman, Barcelos and Rohit Malhotra, GM – Operations, Barcelos India.
“The restaurant is a paradise for vegetarians with a wide variety of dishes such as stuffed mushrooms and potatoes filled with the richness of paneer or a veg wrap. A meal for two will set one back by about Rs1,500,” Rohit Malhotra, GM – Operations, Barcelos India told indiaretailing.
Rich with peri-peri flavoured, flame grilled delicacies, Barcelos has introduced an exclusive menu to cater to the palate of the Indian customers. The Bracelos exclusive menu includes:

  • Barcelos’s grilled trout fish, Himalayan water whole trout fish marinated and grilled with peri sauce exclusively serving in India.
  • Humus and Baba ganoush with Pita.
  • Stuffed potatoes and mushrooms.
  • Esptada, available in three variants i.e. Veg, chicken and fish.
  • Galito roll in veg and chicken variants.
  • Barcelos is offering drinks like kala khatta and kulfi, which is familiar with Indians.
  • And many more exclusive dishes and drinks.

The restaurant gives a choice to enjoy food with four sauces: tangy lemon, mild peri, veri peri and supa peris. One can also mix any two sauces to get a new flavour.
Speaking at the launch, Costa Maziz, Chairman, Barcelos, said, “We have redesigned our menu to cater to vegetarian customers with the introduction of 40 per cent new vegetarian dishes.”
Referring to the chain’s India strategy, Malhotra said all further Barcelos outlets would be of a minimum area of 2400 sqft. “India is a unique market for the global gourmet and we are very happy to add to the divers food culture of India. With our exclusive menu, we are bringing the taste of two cultures together, which will definitely win Indian hearts,” he added.
“A 100 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi was in the land of Barcelos and left. Now barcelos is in India,” Mogale noted.
With a single operation founded in Pretoria, South Africa in 1993, Barcelos has grown exponentially, which led it start franchising in 1998. The founders of the brand are Costa Maziz, John van Eyk and Beverley Vaskys. The comapny currently employs 2,000 staff and actively involved in the operations of the company to ensure continuity and excellence throughout the brand.
