Zafar Ahmed: Growing from strength to strength

Must Read

A decade into the hair industry and the learning is still continuing. Zafar Ahmed, Senior Hair stylist, Head Turners in Kolkata, shares his upward bound journey with Salon India

How did you get started?
I was just out of high school, when I started working as a salon supervisor – managing stocks and taking care of my uncle’s salon. I received informal training there, like assisting the hairdressers, standing alongside them while working on the customers and learning techniques. In 2005, I joined Habib’s Academy in Kolkata. I got a job at Club Prana in Kolkata’s Hyatt Regency. I used to train during the days and work after. This period was a struggle as well as a great change for me but, it was just the start!

What was the turning point?
In 2008, I joined Lakmé Beauty Salon, where within the fi rst year, I was able achieve the given target. I won the opportunity to get my fi rst international level training at A Cut Above Academy in Malaysia. This opportunity not only honed my skills, but gave me the required confi dence and faith in my work. I am currently placed at Head Turners for the past four and a half years.

What were the personal challenges?
I chose my passion instead of following the trend of settling for a white collar job. At home, I am an exception.

What is more important – hair care or styling?
Hair care has became a household name in the recent times, with the clients being aware. Customers are not only willing to spend on styling, but also on hair care.Hair care is important, especially if styling is done recurrently. Today, styling exists in two very contrasting manners. Very natural and classic styles on one hand, and on the other, quirky and edgy cuts, full of colour and drama.

Who is your favourite hairstylist?
The late Vidal Sassoon and his work has always been a great influence in my career. I am currently also doing the ABC course from the Vidal Sassoon Academy. Learning shouldn’t stop.

Which is brand you prefer to work with?
Sebastian Professional.

What is your advice to beginners?
I would advice the aspirants to strengthen their basics, know the correct techniques, hard work and the rest will follow.

What’s your success mantra?
Keeping faith in your work and loving whatever you do will get you through all the barriers and to the right place.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy working the most, keeping myself updated with the new trends and I like to travel.

What are your future plans?
I would love to have my own salon some day. Also, I want to travel the world, increase my exposure and work around the globe.

Who would you love to style?
Miranda Kerr!
