The Indian Internet Pharmacy Association, representing online drug retailing platforms, has reportedly met Maharashtra drug regulator Harshadeep Kamble and had made submissions related to compliance and suggested ways to encourage the growing trend, while ensuring public health.
Kamble is also heading the core committee formed by the health ministry to evaluate whether online medicine sale should be allowed or not.
The online drug retailers said that the online marketplaces that facilitate drug sale are compliant with the drug law and hence should not be banned in the country. Online marketplaces are platforms or websites which take orders from customers against a prescription uploaded on their websites.
These organisations claim that they have trained professionals to verify and validate these prescriptions before they confirm order. Following this the order is transferred to a local chemist of the area from where the order has been placed and local chemist, who is a licensed pharmacist caters to the customer.
The central drug controller recently imposed a temporary ban on online sales of medicines even as the government is yet to take a final call on the issue and is waiting for the core committee to submit its recommendations.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has asked state drug inspectors to keep a “strict vigil on online sale of medicines” and said those indulging in online sale of medicines in violation of the law will face strong action including a heavy penalty.
