Delhi Crafts Council Presents ‘Sarees of India’

Sarees of India –Innovating Tradition, is a three-day exhibition organised by Delhi Crafts Council going to be held from the September 4 to 6, 2014 at the Aga Khan Hall, Bhagwandas Road, Delhi. This exhibition brings together a stunning collection of hand woven saree from pan India including states like Odisha, West Bengal, Assam and Benaras. The annual exhibition focuses on novel techniques and new ideas re-inventing the traditional weaves and prints.

Pratiksha Somaia – General Secretary of the Delhi Crafts Council said, “The participants have created a collection of sarees that embody the true essence of handloom textiles and combined it with contemporary design elements resulting in unique and stunning weaves for this exhibition. It is aimed at showcasing sarees to promote the heritage, culture and revival of the ultimate unstitched garment.”

Purnima Rai – President, Delhi Crafts Council said, “This year we are delighted to exhibit the work of 20 participants bringing numerous types of sarees in traditional Indian weaves to the event. The range of textiles includes Chanderi, Chikankari, Linen, Khadi, South Indian Weaves, Prints, Kantha, Bandhani, Ikat, Tussar Weaves, Venkatgiri and Uppada.”

The exhibitors at Sarees Of India- Innovating Tradition 2014 – include Vriksha Design Studio, who brings together the finest weaves from State of Odisha. Also exhibiting is Pradeep Pillai who has been working with hand-woven techniques to create timeless pieces of tussar weaving from Bihar and silk venkatgiri of Andhra Pradesh.

Sarees in interesting textures and new techniques, bright and bold hues will be displayed by Bailou who brings to Delhi an eclectic line of sarees created by the weavers of West Bengal. Sapna Vedula Dhawla has created a collection of contemporary Ikat sarees with bold patterns and new layouts.

Designers Sarita and Sarika bring forth Karomi, a brand synonymous with hand-crafted and hand-made textiles, specializing in hand-loom weaving, hand-block printing and embroideries from Kolkata.
