Headquartered in Los Angeles, Forever 21 is the 5th largest specialty retailer in the United States. The average store size is 38,000 square feet, the largest is approximately 162,000 square feet and the original Fashion 21 store is only 900 square feet. Fashion 21 rung up $700,000 in sales in its first year. The prior three businesses that occupied that building failed within the first year. Even with the company’s tremendous growth, it still remains a family-owned business.
The first Forever 21 store was founded in Los Angeles, California on April 21, 1984 by Do Won Chang and his wife Jin Sook Chang. The store is located in Figueroa Street in the Highland Park district of Los Angeles and is still in operation, bearing the chain’s original name. Designs similar to those seen in South Korea were sold and targeted to the Los Angeles Korean-American community. By 2013, sales totaled to $700,000 and there were more than 480 stores that brought in revenue of $3.7 billion. As on February 2014, Forever 21 generated a revenue of $3.8 billion globally. Originally, Forever 21 only sold clothes for women, but later expanded to sell menswear. Most Forever 21 stores now sell clothes for both men and women.
The India Story
Forever 21 launched their online shopping website in India – www.forever21.com in July 2014. It offers a wide range of affordable clothing, footwear, accessories, jewellery, beauty products and more. Their stores are present in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Noida and Pune. On 29th April, 2016, the brand will open two stores in Orion Mall and V R Mall, Bengaluru.
