HUL offers ex- gratia to settle mercury vapour issue

Must Read

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has made a settlement with its former employees who had filed a suit in High Court for economic rehabilitation in February 2006.

The ex-workers complained of various health problems due to toxic mercury vapour in HUL’s former thermometer factory located in Kodaikanal. For last two years the FMCG major has been holding talks with the ex workers and their representatives to sort out the issue and normalise the situation again.

The agreement was finally signed on March 4, 2016 and HUL has agreed to provide ex- gratia payments to about 591 workers which will also include their families. This amount will target towards livelihood enhancement projects and skill enhancement programmes.

HUL Executive Director – Legal and Corporate Affairs Dev Bajpai said: “We have worked hard over many years to address this and find the right solution for our former workers. We, alongside all involved, are glad to see an outcome to this long-standing case.” as reported by NDTV.
