Mobile phones top sellers during last week's e-commerce sales

The e-commerce pre-Diwali face-off, which concluded on Oct 17, with sales numbers reaching as high as two thousand crores for some players, showed that mobile phones was the highest selling category for almost all ecommerce majors.
Flipkart said it has sold half a million mobile handsets within 10 hours as part of its The Big Billion Days sale. “This sets a record for the highest number of mobile phones sold in India in a short period of ten hours in any platform, either online or offline,” Flipkart said in a statement.

The Bengaluru-based firm said the platform saw huge sales of 4G-enabled devices. “About 75 per cent of the phones sold during the ten hours period were 4G phones,” it added.
Cashback and coupons site CashKaro.com, which had launched India’s first cashback festival – Great Online Cashback Festival (GOCF) from October 13 till Oct 16, also said mobile phones was the highest selling category with 40% sales coming from mobile phones, followed by 22% sales from fashion, 18% from large electronic appliances, 12% from home decor category and 8% from other categories (food, health and beauty).
“Mobiles and accessories has always been one of the top performing categories during sales in terms of sales, followed by fashion,” Rohan Bhargava, Co-Founder, CashKaro.com told Indiaretailing.
“Mobile phone sales are majorly driven by attractive exchange offers, discounts and easy EMI options, considering 50 per cent of customers availing the bank offers. Above that, the EXTRA cashback from a platform like ours makes it a significant bargain for any shopper with huge savings,” he added.
Like Flipkart and Cashakro, Amazon also witnessed an explosive growth in the mobile phone category on the Day 3 (Oct 15) of The Great Indian Festive Sale.
It witnessed 3X growth in the mobile phone category over the previous biggest day during the Great Indian Freedom Sale. “The mobile phones category exceeded a single day sale in the first hour itself. More than 20% of the phones sold were above the 20k price range,” said an Amazon spokesperson.

As per a recent ASSOCHAM report, mobile phone were the most searched category online during sales promotions, followed by apparel, computers & tablets, electronics, home-kitchen appliances, accessories and books, during the Flipkart’s Bilion Days sale.
The survey also pointed out that Delhi recorded an 88.5 per cent rise in online shopping during this festive season against regular online shopping that rose 56 per cent from the regular online shopping.
