Oma Spa at The Serai in Chikmagalur, channels the goodness of coffee with the alchemy unleashed by Malika Ghaib, Spa Head, Oma Spa at The Serai in Chikmagalur
Please tell us about your professional background.
After graduating in Science, it was my passion for the Beauty and Wellness industry that drove me to research on natural skin care and formulate tailor-made natural products for the organisations that I have worked with. Today, as Founder and Chief Consultant of Cloud 9 Spas, I feel honoured to share my experience of 17 years with international clientele in the hospitality industry.

What are your views on the growing wellness industry in India?

Wellness is not something that money can buy. Everybody is realising that now and therefore, the emphasis is on the overall experience a spa offers – right from its location, equipment, the staff, spa menus and the ingredients used for therapies. Indians are informed clientele now who do not settle for half measures.

What is the USP of Oma Spa?

Oma, meaning ‘life giver’ in Sanskrit, is a very unique spa based on the principles of holistic, natural, back-to-the-earth wellness and beautification. The signature therapies are made from the purest botanical extracts to soothe, relax and invigorate. Ancient Eastern remedies and the latest Western ones are combined under trained therapists. The best part is that most of the treatments are based on coffee that is grown and processed at the estate itself. With dedicated areas for a state of the art treatment rooms, relaxation areas and a well laid out pedicure bay, the spa offers an array of luxury spa treatments. We offer treatments that are of international standards with a blend of western and eastern therapies with modern technology. The beauty services are designed accordingly to complement the luxury of leisure times and create a totally blissful experience.
What kind of therapies do you offer?
At the Oma Spa, the signature therapies are based on freshly ground coffee from their own estates, utilising the vasoconstrictor, antioxidant and diuretic properties of coffee to tighten the skin, improve its elasticity and bust cellulite, while purging the body of toxins. A coffee bean hides within itself a whole world of goodness. The extensive day spa menu includes full body massage, body scrubs and wraps, facials, manicure and pedicure. With a holistic approach to fi tness, grooming and rejuvenation, the Oma Spa is a perfect destination for an extended spa break that revitalises, de-stresses and aligns one’s senses. The massage therapies are tailored to work on the physical as well as psychological front to ease pain, boost circulation, alleviate stress, soothe the soul and foster balance and serenity.

What are the main challenges that you face?

We are trying to build The Serai at Chikmagalur as a spa resort – a complete wellness destination. The challenge we face could actually be a blessing in disguise. Most people are not aware of the scenic beauty and tranquil environs of Chikmagalur. People are aware of Sravanbelagola and Hampi, but usually skip Chikmagalur.

What are your plans for the future?

We aim to make Oma Spas, at all our three properties, at par with world-class spa destinations where we offer a large variety of therapies in luxurious settings. For many, a periodic wellbeing holiday has become a necessity and they are prepared to invest in this time, in order to address any health concerns they may have and stay in peak physical and mental condition. We aim to grow in the future, in terms of offering solutions for lifestyle-related disorders and relaxation for all, in tranquillity and solitude.
