Spencer’s Retail launches first hypermarket in Greater Noida; plans to open 10 more hypermarkets by end of the year

Spencer’s Retail has launched a first hypermarket in the Greater Noida region, at the basement level of Ansal Plaza mall. This is the 34th hypermarket in the country and 4th in the national capital region (NCR).

Spread over 31,700 sq ft, the store offers over 15,000 products across verticals such as food and grocery, fresh produce, home and office essentials, electronic products, and personal care. Some of the major highlights of the food segment includes, fish and meat section, Spencer’s Patisserie – a live bakery counter, dairy, chilled and frozen products and food-take away counter.

Elaborating on the expansion plan, Shashwat Goenka, Sector Head – Spencer’s Retail, says, “We plan to open 2-3 hypermarkets by September-October this year in Andhra Pradesh. Our aim is to open 11 stores by end of this year, including this store in Greater Noida, so now we will be opening 10 more stores. We will focus on North, East and South India for expanding our presence.”

“We opened 10 hypermarkets last year and will continue to aggressively expand our presence across geographies, with a target to reach 100 hypermarkets by 2017,” he adds.

The store’s food and grocery section consists of 5-10 percent imported brands and around 30-35 percent private labels in the staples category.

“We expect an average bill size of Rs 450 – Rs 500 and over 3000 footfalls. Like our other stores even this store is expected to break-even after an year of its operations,” says Goenka.

He adds, “The assortment of products has been put together keeping in mind the requirement of the shoppers in the locality, and a lot of emphasis has been laid to ensure shopping convenience.”

Spencer’s in Greater Noida offers more than 140 variants of nuts, dry fruits and spices such as Californian almonds, walnut, raisins, figs, apricots, pistachios, pine nuts, prunes, hazelnuts, blueberries, and blackberries. The store also offers more than 170 variants of organic food products in fresh food as well as staples.
