Abundance of Talent: David Maderich

Must Read

The New York-based make-up expert has groomed the faces of Mary Kate Olsen, Joan Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Brad Pitt, Tim Gunn, Dave Mathews Band, Justin Chambers, Ricki Lake, and many more renowned celebrities. He has also worked as freelance make-up artist for 10 years for various magazines and ad campaigns. With Salon India, David Maderich shares his journey so far.

Getting Started

I’ve been doing make-up for the past 15 years. I went to college for journalism and found myself doing club make-up for fun and it turned into a career. I am completely self-taught– I’ve never ever assisted anyone or had a mentor. My only mentors were fashion magazines and habitués of nightlife.

Speciality

My speciality is edgy glamour. I always like to add an element of beauty in my work. I would never want to make a girl look ugly for the sake of fashion.

Inspiration

I used to be inspired by young club-goers and pop culture but now the majority of pop stars and kids want to look 40 years old. Today, the random colours of nature and flowers inspire me.

Favourite Products

I use so many different brands but my favourite foundations and powders are by Make Up For Ever. I also order theatrical makeup like Ben Nye.

Makeup Trends for the Season

This season it’s all about a pop of colour on the lips – wine, red or purple. Go wild.

Currently Working On

I am working on designing collections for the 2014 NAHA competitions as well as fashion editorials.

Plans for Make-up Academy

I teach photography make-up in New York City at Artist Session, which is a two-day workshop for hairstylists who want to be editorial stylists.
