Online marketplace Snapdeal.com registered a 10 time spike in sales as compared to last year on the first two days of the Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) 2013. Launched in December 2012, this initiative by Google is aimed at further boosting the adoption of online shopping in India.
As part of GOSF 2013, customers can avail discounts of upto 70 percent across various categories such as fashion, entertainment, electronics, and home decor on Snapdeal.com. On the first two days of the three day online shopping festival, i.e., 11th and 12th December 2013, the site saw a tremendous increase in the sales. More than 70 percent of over 20,000 Snapdeal sellers participated in the GOSF 2013.
Speaking about the GOSF 2013, Sandeep Komaravelly, VP, Marketing, Snapdeal.com, said: “GOSF 2013 has started off with a blast on Snapdeal.com. We have seen 10-time increase in sales as compared to last year. We expect to see a further increase in the sales in the next two days as well. Initiatives like GOSF act as a catalyst to further boost adoption of Online Shopping in India. In fact a lot of these new shoppers become repeat buyers and add up to the traffic on the website.”
While in 2012, during the GOSF majority of the sales came from Metro cities at 66 percent followed by tier 1 cities at 17 percent, tier 2 at 9 percent and tier 3 at 8 percent, in the current year tier-wise sales distribution was more homogenous with metro cities at 34 percent, tier 1 at 22 percent, tier 2 at 25 percent and tier 3 at 19 percent.
