“Delhi is the largest e-commerce hub in India closely followed by Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Chennai,” Muralikrishnan B, Country Manager, eBay India has said revealing the findings of eBay India Census 2011. Some interesting trends about the online shopping habits of Delhiites revealed in the census were that technology products recorded the highest domestic transactions (51 percent) and the city recorded an increased sale of body art products and kids footwear while the import of candles and sunglasses was the highest in Indian Capital on eBay India.

Unveiling the fourth edition of the annual eBay Census guide which documents the key trends in online buying, importing, selling and exporting across India in the top 20 e-commerce hubs, 28 states and 7 Union Territories, Muralikrishnan said: “India has over 3,311 e-commerce hubs. Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are among the top five states with highest number of transactions. The rural consumers and entrepreneurs of the country are increasingly getting into e-commerce as over 1,267 rural hubs are transacting on eBay India accounting for 1 out of every 10 purchases. One out of every 20 sales on eBay India is from the rural areas.”

He added: “Though the metro cities in India still dominate the share of purchases (51 percent of total transactions) , tier II and III cities which we call Bharat are catching up fast accounting for 40 percent of total transactions. Rural India contributes 9 percent in the total online transactions of eBay. Indians shopping online are brand savvy. Sony is the largest brand on eBay India closely followed by Nokia, Samsung, Apple and Reebok.”

Muralikrishnan said that another trend observed was that Indian women are now increasingly shopping online, buying cosmetics, jewelry, watches, fashion and fitness equipment. Over 45 percent of all purchases by women fall in the lifestyle category.

Electronic gadgets continue to be the most popular accounting for 50 percent of all online purchases on eBay India. Indian retailers are now exporting products to eBayers in 189 countries. United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Germany are the top five countries for Indian exports. India now also imports from 120 countries.

eBay census 2011 research findings were based on an analysis of all online buying and selling transactions by Indians on eBay between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. eBay India analyzed the transactions over a year within the individual Indian state and Union Territories as well as the key Indian cities to identify the top buying and selling hubs. The retail export and import transactions between global eBayers and Indian eBayers were also analyzed.

eBay India, the country’s e-commerce marketplace, is an online shopping destination where thousands of entrepreneurs list a wide range of products across electronics, lifestyle, collectibles and media categories. The e-commerce portal is a 100 percent subsidiary of eBay Inc.
