Retail pioneer Raghu Pillai passes away

IMAGES laments the shocking and premature loss of retail guru and pioneer of modern Indian retail Raghu Pillai early this morning. Pillai died of a massive heart attack in Chennai early today (Sunday April 10).

Images Group Director & CEO Jayant Kochar said, "This is a sad day for us all. Raghu was one of the most vibrant and dynamic business leaders of the country. Having held leadership positions with RPG Spencers, Future Group and Reliance Retail, he has been one of the most influential forces in shaping the direction of Indian Retail. In spite of his onerous responsibilities, he was generous with his time and knowledge, and touched the lives of many around him. Our sincere condolences to his family, and the entire retail fraternity."

Aditya Birla Retail CEO Thomas Varghese was quoted by PTI as saying: "it is a big blow to the retail industry, which has lost one of the best talents it ever had. He was always full of life and never looked stressed out. My heart goes out to his family. May his soul rest in peace."
 
"We have lost one of the pioneers of modern retail in India and a builder of several retail businesses. Raghu greatly influenced the lives of several people who have built a career in modern retail. He will continue to live in their minds and hearts," Bijou Kurien, CEO, Reliance Retail told PTI.
 
Pillai was 53 years old and is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
