E-commerce giant eBay has announced that last Sunday (December 12) was the marketplace’s biggest shopping day ever via mobile phones in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV). eBay mobile GMV grew by 127 per cent to $5 million in the US and 165 per cent to $13 million globally on Sunday from a year-ago period.

In the US, eBay mobile GMV was up 38 per cent on what eBay is now referring to as ‘Mobile Sunday’. In terms of volume of sales, clothing and accessories topped the list, followed by cars and trucks and jewellery and accessories.

The top five US states by sales volume included California, Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana and Ohio. At the peak of the shopping frenzy in the US on the marketplace (1 pm to 4 pm EST), eBay saw more than 9,500 transactions per hour.

The e-commerce portal has been making a big push to launch and promote its new mobile offerings in time for the holiday season. As more consumers look to their mobile phones as a way to search and shop for products, eBay is gaining more traffic to its apps. Their primary iPhone app has seen over 13 million downloads, and its suite of apps has been downloaded 30 million times.
