The new MAC cosmetics store, which opened in January this year at the Promenade Mall, Vasant Kunj was the scene of much activity on February 26, marking the first AIDS Awareness Day event done by the brand in New Delhi.

Mickey Contractor, MAC’s Director of Artistry tells Salon India that the process of fund raising for the brand, held at least once a year since the brand was launched in India in 2005 has raised more than Rs 7 crore ($1.5 million).

Viva Glam has six lipsticks in different colors and two lip glosses. It is the primary fund-raising tool that was created in 1994 by MAC’s charitable outreach arm, the MAC AIDS Fund. The entire selling price of these products goes into the MAC AIDS Awareness Fund to help people who are affected and living with AIDS. The MAC AIDS Awareness Fund has raised more than Rs 700 crore ($150 million) through worldwide sales.

“While Viva Glam has a range of shades, different colors tend to be popular according to the area,” says Mickey Contractor. “The best seller in Mumbai is usually the plum shade, while in New Delhi it is red. The nude color is popular with the younger customers.”

The newest spokespeople were announced by the MAC AIDS Awareness Fund this January – Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper, both popular icons in the music industry. Two new Viva Glam lipsticks have been launched, each bearing the artists’ signature.
